HiThinking about getting a USB cardI use an external dedicated clock which is linked to my USB-SPDIF converter. Is it worth spending the $400+ for OXCO clock on Pang's Ver 3 and Ver 4 cards or will a Paul Pang Ver 2 be good enough?Any thoughts welcomeThanksI have both the V2 and the V4 cards. The V4 card is better, more depth, a bit smoother.

However, at $126 the V2 card is a bargain and is almost as good. I use the V2 card on my control pc to input music from my 2 Porsche 4 TB hard drives. The V4 is outputting on my audio pc and both have been rock solid.Pearse, I have tried to PM you several times before (forget why) but your mailbox is full. You have a very nice setup.
I would like to build a new audio pc, probably early next year. I have about 6 months to research and figure out what to do.I'm a novice though and it will be a challenge, but that's how we learn. Do not forget JCat USB as well. The PPA cards are good but better than JCat.more different flavor than better.I have blown a V2 Card, a V3 card and recently my V4 card gave in for no good reason, thankfully my trusty JCat card was ready and is running great.seems a bit more robust to be honest and it can run without a 5v Molex feed if you are feeding a DAC that does not need the 5v signal.Cheers,Pearse.PearseThanks for sharing.
I didn't forget about the JCAT USB card. Its just in the same higher price segment like the V3 and V4 PP cards. Yes the ability to run it without a 5V is a positive, but isn't it better to run it with a 5V? I have both the V2 and the V4 cards.

Seems consistent with what others have said elsewhere on this forum. You seem to have put your V2 to an interesting use case - inout rather than output. Can you make out any difference there? Also, what PSUs are you using for the V2 and V4?KB.

I feel the V2 as an input for my ext HDs gives more detail and depth than the regular usb input. I upgraded my 2 pcs with Corsair AX860is, very good for the money and an easy install for this novice.
They gave a big performance boost over the stock psus in these Lenovos. I also use an Audioquest Carbon (A to Micro) usb cable to input.and a 12 volt linear psu on the Porsche 4tb drives. For the output V4 card, I just bought this:I'll let you know how much it improves the SQ.I have a PPA usb cable iusb power Gemini cable ifi idsd micro on the output.I anxiously waiting for the ifi idsd pro to be my end game dac for this system.hopefully in a few months they'll release it.As you can see, PPA and ifi are my go to companies. Highly recommend any of their products. Yes, these cards are great for both input and output. I feel the V2 as an input for my ext HDs gives more detail and depth than the regular usb input. I seem to think that a LAN cable between my 2 PCs will be a useful upgrade. I have noted your recommendation - thanks. Maybe if I can sell off some surplus cables which are lying around.KB. Jitterbug, I finally got around to putting the linear supply on my V4 card.
Very significant improvement. The whole soundstage got blacker and deeper. Tremendous bass improvement.even sub-bass. More relaxed and analog sound. You can click the link above for the Teradak linear I'm using.I would say V2 + linear is better than V4 alone.
V4 + linear is the best.So if price is a limitation, get the V2 and the Teradak linear, you will not regret it.franranthanks for the feedback. I will keep your recommendation in mind.KB. Mostly the improvement is due to powering the usb cards oscillator cleanlyUSB Cards won't in any way reach their potential until this is doneI'd go as far to say the cards power supply will be more important than which audiophile card you choose that said there's still differences between themAlso look at li-ion and lifepo4 battery suppliesMy battery adapter arrived from PPA.I am now able to use my SOtM mBPS-d2s(6.5-8.5 out) and adapt it to 5 volts for the PPA V4 card. As you said nige, big improvement. Blacker background, deeper bass, more details revealed.
Now I am realizing the full potential of this V4 card. This card will get as good as the supply you put on it. What Nige2000 said about the most improvement in the PCIe usb cards comes from external power is very true.
Although you will get improvement using the internal psu, 60% comes from the added supply source. As I stated earlier, I also use a PPA usb card (V2) to input my external Hard drives, I use both inputs for my 2 Lacie 4tb drives. I have placed a Teradak 5 volt linear on the usb card and the results are very impressive. External PSUs give improved sonics and incredible depth to the presentation. Highly recommended for this use.
